Every resident and visitor to Clinton County can enjoy the natural beauty of New York State, from the first buds in spring to the vibrant leaves and crisp mornings of fall. Outdoor enthusiasts, couples, and families continue to choose Clinton County to visit and live, where they can balance affordability and amenities with fun excursions.

“The Adirondack Coast is an outdoor recreation destination with something for every skill level,” says Kristy Kennedy, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for the Adirondack Coast Visitors Bureau. “Water is our playground in Clinton County, whether you're boating, paddling, fishing, or relaxing on the beach. Beyond the shoreline, you'll find miles of hiking trails, scenic road cycling, mountain biking, golf, and countless ways to enjoy the outdoors year-round.”

If you’re a fan of the outdoors, then you will love Clinton County. If you’re curious about the outdoors, there are plenty of resources to develop your skills and explore new hobbies. Everyone can find a favorite trail or playground here, offering peaceful immersion into nature’s beauty.

Mountains, Beaches, Trails, and More

Two of the coolest parts of Clinton County are its proximity to the Adirondack Mountains and its location along Lake Champlain. Hikers can spend the morning climbing a mountainside with breathtaking views, while other visitors enjoy sailing or boating on the lake. Plattsburgh is known for its freshwater beaches, where residents relax on warm summer days and play in the sand.

Access to the mountains also means there are plenty of rivers and creeks. Clinton County attracts avid fly fishers in the streams and bass fishermen in the lakes, along with kayakers and canoers in all waterways. There are plenty of swimming holes and trails built alongside the running water.

This part of New York also allows you to choose how to connect with the outdoors. There are options for extreme sports or peaceful bird watching. You can get outside for a whole day or just a few minutes. Do what’s right for you.

“Access to the outdoors is Clinton County’s greatest asset,” says Kennedy. “There’s something truly authentic about being here. You can unplug, reconnect with nature, and step away from the everyday without sacrificing convenience. We have vibrant communities, good jobs, local businesses, and the amenities people need, all surrounded by the beauty of the Adirondack Coast.”

All Kinds of Families Can Enjoy the Outdoors

You don’t need to be an experienced hiker or sailing enthusiast to enjoy Clinton County. There are short trails for families and paths that are child and dog-friendly. Additionally, many State Parks offer programs to help you become more familiar with the terrain, plants, and birds of the North Country. Considering there are more than 250 species of breeding birds in the state (and 100 visiting species throughout the year), there’s a lot to learn!

Outside of the nature trails, Plattsburgh is known for its family-friendly beaches and events, while many of the area's scenic cycling routes travel along quieter roads, making them ideal for riders of all ages and abilities. Kennedy says one of the best parts of exploring the region by bike is discovering the local ice cream stands along the way, a perfect excuse to stop and refuel.

“A family with a small child isn’t going to hike a mountain for five hours,” says Kennedy. “But they can still get outside, explore a nature trail, spend the day at the beach, ride their bikes, and enjoy everything the Adirondack Coast has to offer. The goal is simply to get outdoors and make memories together.”

Clinton County Parks Have Accessible Options

There are also opportunities for Clinton County residents and visitors with disabilities to connect with nature. Some trails throughout Clinton County are paved, allowing people in wheelchairs to enjoy the outdoors. Point Au Roche State Park in Plattsburgh has an accessible kayak launch to help people get on the water more easily.

“While outdoor destinations aren’t always seen as accessible, we are taking steps to make sure anyone can experience the Adirondacks,” says Kennedy. “Accessibility initiatives and programs are being developed at both the state and county levels.”

This also includes people with invisible, mental, and developmental disabilities. The parks system is working to make more spaces inclusive by adding accessible playground equipment and creating quiet zones for people with sensory needs.

Nature is Delicious

Along with the ample ice cream stands, visitors looking to get outside in Clinton County can stop by one of the various farms and orchards that dot the countryside. They can pick up maple syrup or head to a creamery and meet some cows. There are also several locations where you can pick apples, berries, and pumpkins, depending on what is in season.

Clinton County is the second-largest producer of McIntosh apples in the United States and home to one of the oldest and largest McIntosh orchards in the country. After you pick your own apples, Kennedy recommends trying the apple cider donuts or a thick slice of apple pie. Both treats are healthy because of the fruit, right?

The proximity to local agriculture also makes tucking into a meal especially delicious after a big day in nature. Many restaurants cook with local produce, so you can enjoy a hearty meal that came from Clinton County growers and farmers.
